Welcome to the Wiki for the Early American Special Interest Group of JewishGen

Please add information here that will be of value to people studying Jewish genealogy in the United States prior to 1880.

Links and Data for Specific States and Cities

Links in this section are sorted first by state and then by city.

To add a new town (or add data to an old one) please read this: Adding New Towns Or New Data.

Ideas for things to add to a city's page: Ideas To Add.

If the city name is a link, then there is a web page for that city (e.g. AL Mobile is Mobile, Alabama). If the city name is not a link, then there are only one or two links for that city and they are on this page (e.g. Santa Cruz). If there is a link, but the page is empty, that means you can fill in information about that city into the blank page. Finally, if there is no link to a city you want to add, please add it!

General Links

  • A good start would be the full online text of Malcolm Stern's book, First American Jewish Families.
  • Another resource: American Jewish Archive at Hebrew Union College's online catalog
  • The American Jewish Committee Archives has Yearbooks beginning in 1899. From a genealogy point of view the material gives more of a 'flavor' of the times than anything concrete unless a family member is listed in the yearbooks (then an address is given, which might be useful).

Cryptojews, conversos, anuism, etc.

(This section is most useful to New Mexico and Arizona, and other formerly Spanish parts of the USA.)
